IT Governance
IT Governance is once again becoming a very ‘hot topic’ for IT Managers. However there is still a high degree of confusion as to what IT Governance actually is, what is it all about, why you need to start thinking about it.
Well e-Quant have many years of experience in helping organisations understand what IT Governance actually is and what benefits it can bring to their organisation. We have helped many organisations to develop control frameworks to ensure that IT Governance is being followed (and is delivering value!).
Many organisations have turned to IT Governance due to compliance initiatives, for instance Sarbanes-Oxley in the USA and Basel II in Europe. However the benefits of IT Governance can be far more than simply ensuring legal compliance - The bottom line is that IT Governance is all about ensuring that IT is doing the right thing! It provides a means to ensure that IT is truly delivering value to the business.
For many organisations the key benefits of IT Governance will include:
• Closer alignment of IT investments and priorities with the needs of the business.
• Improved IT organisational performance, compliance, maturity and staff development.
• Improved IT customer service and overall responsiveness.
• The ability to manage, evaluate, prioritise, fund, measure and monitor requests for IT services, in a more consistent and repeatable manner.
• More effective management of the utilisation of IT related resources and assets.
• Greater confidence that IT will deliver on its plans, budgets and commitments.
• The proactive and effective management of risks, change and contingency.
IT Governance is also a key driver in identifying and eliminating waste and poor performance in IT. The most commonly adopted control framework for IT Governance is called Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT). COBIT (and ISO38500) is an ‘Area of Expertise’ for e-Quant. COBIT focuses on the measures needed to ensure successful the successful delivery of business aligned IT. It describes a complete range of management processes which have proved useful in helping ensure that IT investments deliver real value for the businesses.
There is also now an associated standard for IT Governance – ISO38500.
