ITIL®
– a wasted opportunity?
The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is by far the most widely used framework for effective IT Service Management. ITIL is used throughout the world, is not limited to any single industry sector, and is suitable for organisations of all sizes.
However the unfortunate truth is that many organisations that have adopted the ITIL framework are simply wasting their time and money – this is a real wasted opportunity.
Our experience shows that in excess of 70% of so called ‘ITIL® implementations’ fail to deliver any meaningful or measurable benefits to an organisation. We hear the same story over and over again, how organisations have spent large sums of money and thousands of man hours training their staff and implementing ITIL®, and the end result has been no tangible improvement whatsoever – no improvement in service performance, quality etc. You have lots of processes (but it seems like process for the sake of process), you have a lot of staff who have passed the Foundation examination but who still seem unsure of what ITIL actually is (or what to do with it) – and the bottom line is that nothing seems to have improved. The customer is still unhappy and complains. The number and duration of outages seems to be about the same as before. People seem to be working just as hard getting nowhere just as fast as before!
This is because ITIL is not only the most popular framework for IT Service Management it is also the most misunderstood.
It is not all about process – it is all about improvement!
Unlike many organisations who provide consultancy in this area e-Quant truly understand what ITIL is and how best to use it. Because of this we are able to advise you on how best to use the ITIL framework to drive meaningful and lasting IT Operational improvement. Our aim is to cut through all the hype and theory (and misunderstandings) surrounding ITIL and show you how it should really be used (in simple practical terms).
If you are interested in finding out what ITIL might be able to do for your organisation why not take a look below at our ‘ITIL Starter Pack’. This is a short 3 day exercise that introduces you and your key staff to what ITIL actually is, and highlights what parts of ITIL would be of most use in your organisation. By following our approach you will be sure that your use of ITIL will actually deliver real and measurable IT operational benefits.
The ITIL ‘Starter Pack’
At e-Quant we recognise that many organisations are confused as to how to start adopting and using ITIL in order to gain the real benefits associated with employing effective IT Service Management Best Practices.
To address this, and make it as easy as possible for you to start using ITIL and gain real and tangible IT Operational benefits e-Quant offer a unique ITIL ‘Starter Pack’.
This is a 3 day mixture of training and consultancy which gives you and your organisation a practical understanding of what ITIL is, how and when you might use it, what the potential benefits and costs will be, and how it might fit into your organisation.
This 3 day exercise will not only help you fully understand what ITIL actually is and how it might benefit you, but it will also provide you with a road map for effective implementation, and details of how to measure the benefits in the form of a realistic Return on Investment analysis.
The agenda for each 3 day ‘Starter Pack’ assignment varies slightly as we customise each assignment to the needs of each individual organisation, but for an ITIL ‘Starter Pack’ it will generally follow a timetable that looks like:
Day 1 – a.m. ITIL Awareness training / workshop for your key staff
This will be a half day session that introduces ITIL to your key staff. It will illustrate in very practical terms what ITIL is, how to use it, and what benefits can be gained from it, etc. It will also show how ITIL fits into the wider IT Service Management world, by showing how it relates to other standards and frameworks such as ISO20000, COBIT etc. It should be noted that this will not be a ‘dry ITIL theory session’, but a highly interactive practical overview of ITIL that everybody will understand.
Day 1 – p.m.
High level Quality of Service assessment
The aim of this session is to fully understand the strengths and weaknesses of your present IT Service Management provision. Only when this is understood can we get a clear picture of how ITIL (and what parts of ITIL) might be most useful to you. This session will consist of our highly experienced ITIL consultant undertaking either a series of 1-1 interviews, group interviews or workshops with your key IT Operational staff. Where practical and possible this might also involve input from your key customers and suppliers.
Day 2 Having identified the potential areas where ITIL might prove beneficial, day 2 consists of assessing the current maturity of the potential ITIL processes within your existing organisation. The aim being to understand the current state of alignment of your operational practices to ITIL Best Practices and then to map how this ‘gap’ can be closed.
Day 3 This is where the solution is presented. It will provide you with an overview of the findings from Days 1 & 2 and a detailed action plan for adopting the relevant parts of ITIL Best Practices in a practical way that will deliver to you real, measurable and tangible IT Operational benefits. This will show what specific (measurable) benefits will be gained from the implementation of specific parts of the ITIL framework.
It will provide you with the confidence to go forward and to implement ITIL secure in the knowledge that you fully understand what you are doing, why you are doing it, and how it will provide you with real Return on Investment through delivering real IT operational benefits.
