eTOM
eTOM is the most widely used and accepted standard for business processes in the telecommunications industry. An ongoing initiative of the TeleManagement Forum, eTOM delivers a business process model/framework for use by service providers within the telecommunications and related sectors industry. eTOM describes the full scope of business processes required by a service provider and defines key elements on how they interact creating a guidebook that has become the common business language for the telecommunications industry.
It focuses on service delivery to external customers, and it provides a business process blueprint for service providers to streamline their end-to-end processes. It promotes and provides a common vocabulary and thereby enablers effective communication within the Enterprise as well as with customers and suppliers.
As part of our Consultancy practice we provide organisations with advice and guidance on how best to use eTOM within their organisation. Because of our extensive knowledge of other frameworks and standards we are also able to advise on how eTOM can be blended and combined with e.g. Cobit, ITIL etc.
We have mapped the eTOM processes with the ITIL processes. This mapping has shown that the two frameworks are complementary. In practice, the mappings always vary, depending on how and what processes have been implemented. This variance is due partly to the many-to-many relationships between the two frameworks, and partly because of the illustrative nature of the flows in the ITIL. In reality, the ITIL processes and process flows are rarely implemented as per the documentation. There will always be some variance, depending upon how a company is organised and what processes it wants to implement. This is the same for eTOM and produces a mapping which is always specific to an individual organisation.
